You’d like to have your book proofread?

Proofreading for self-published books

You’ve written a book, such as a novel or nonfiction work, that you’d like to publish independently, without a conventional publisher? Congratulations!

Similarly, let me congratulate you for considering a proofreader; two pairs of eyes are always better than one! I can understand that you may find it difficult to subject yourself to criticism from a stranger. And perhaps you’re reluctant to spend money that you might be unable to recoup through book sales, at least not with absolute certainty. Unfortunately, it’s inevitable that someone’s going to spot mistakes lurking in the text—so it’s better that I’m the one who finds them, rather than an irate reader who may write a harmful review.

Ideally, any book should initially undergo professional editing focusing on style, plot, and continuity; it’s also possible to engage a test reader. Next, the book will be revised by you, as its author—several times, as need be. Once you feel that your work is finally complete, it’s time for the final step: proofreading. And that’s precisely what I’ll perform for you!

Proofreading a book, be it a work of fiction or nonfiction merely eliminates all typos, spelling mistakes, or grammatical mistakes. I don’t alter your style; I don’t criticize, and I don’t find fault. My sole task is to watch out for clear-cut mistakes that are beyond dispute, the kind which can creep into a text despite (or due to) multiple revisions. While proofreading, I use the “track changes” function in Word. Once your book has undergone proofreading, you won’t have to perform any further revisions, for then the work will be truly complete.

What does it cost to proofread a book?

For a book which has already been edited, costs usually run €3.00 per page (consisting of 1,500 characters, including spaces). As a general rule, however, I bill by the hour, starting at a rate of €70.00 (plus 19% VAT, if applicable). Either way, after examining the book, I’ll make you an offer containing a lump-sum price—enabling you to know in advance precisely how much it’s going to cost to proofread your book.

Try me out!

I’ll gladly proofread a few pages of your book. That way, you can see my work and assess for yourself whether you find the investment worthwhile. For this trial run, I bill only €70.00 (plus VAT, if applicable) for one hour of my time.
